There are quite a few reasons really. To take one: the food industry in the UK/Europe is really big and employs a lot of people in all sorts of different jobs aside from just engineers and scientists. Its important therefore to make sure the students are aware of the opportunities and interested in the industry to have strong workforce in the future. Also there is a big demand of engineers as typically people don’t associate engineering with food. Traditionally its all oil, gas and chemicals, but to make food cheaply, efficiently, healthily and sustainably you need science and engineering to make it happen!
